Generations online 2009

Generation Y, or young adults generally 18-32 years old who grew up in the Information Age, have been dubbed the ‘Net Generation.’ But, while these “digital natives” may be savvier with their gadgets and more keen on new uses of technology, their elders in Generation X, the Baby Boomers and older generations tend to dominate internet use in other areas.

The biggest increase in internet use since 2005 can be seen in the 70-75 year-old age group. While just over one-fourth (26%) of 70-75 year olds were online in 2005, 45% of that age group is currently online. Much as we watch demographic and age groups move up in “degrees of access” on our “thermometers,”¹ we can probably expect to see these bars become more level as time goes on. For now, though, young people dominate the online population.006-2008.

instant messaging, social networking, and blogging have gained ground as communications tools, but email remains the most popular online activity, particularly among older internet users. Fully 74% of internet users age 64 and older send and receive email, making email the most popular online activity for this age group. At the same time, email has lost some ground among teens; whereas 89% of teens claimed to use email in 2004, just 73% currently say they use email.

All across America less and less people are still believing in the global warming theory. Percentages are declining at a rapid pace. This information is valuable because if people do not feel that there is an actual issue with global warming, then they will no longer try to do things to save the earth.

• Whether they take place on the internet or off, traditional political activities remain the domain of those with high levels of income and education.
• There are hints that forms of civic engagement anchored in blogs and social networking sites could alter long-standing patterns that are based on socio-economic status.
• Those who use blogs and social networking sites as an outlet for civic engagement are far more active in traditional realms of political and nonpolitical participation than are other internet users. In addition, they are even more active than those who do not use the internet at all.
• The internet is now part of the fabric of everyday civic life. Half of those who are involved in a political or community group communicate with other group members using digital tools such as email or group websites.
• Those who make political donations are more likely to use the internet to make their contributions than are those who make charitable donations; however, large political donations are much less likely to be made online than are large charitable donations.

President Barack Obama was named the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize today (10/9/09) was it was a surprise and possibly a shock to people all over the world. He is only 1 of few presidents to receive the award. The Norwegian Nobel Committee felt that he stands for a positive process. Though some may have a problem with him winning the award, others are very proud of the President and happy for his great accomplishment.

The chart breaks down race, age, education, and other forms of differences in people to show viewers the difference there is with the groups and internet use. More adults currently use cell phones than those who go online by only 5% of a difference. 73% to 78%
